There are five types of hair coloring that are used today:

1.Permanent Color

Most permanent color uses peroxide (10 to 40 vol.) and ammonia, although there are now natural ingredients used to reduce the chemicals and provide softer color and better feeling hair. The downside is without proper formulation and pre/post care permanent color tends to be a tad bit damaging.

2.Semi-Permanent Color

Color generally contains some ammonia and uses a developer of 10 to 20 vol.

3.Demi-Permanent Color

This color process uses peroxide in low volumes (under 10 vol.). Many brands of demi-color have no ammonia and leave little damage to the hair. When the color fades, it does so gradually and it leaves no line of demarcation.

4.Semi-Temporary Color

This process will last only a short time (1-4 weeks). There usually is no damage to the hair. The drawback is that it only covers about 40-60% of gray hair.

5.Temporary/ Color Rinse

Color lasts from one shampoo to the next. It is not absorbed by the hair shaft but is deposited on the outside of the hair shaft.

Many people prefer not to have their hair completely color changed but like the highlights added to their hair, in either a lighter shade or darker tone, depending on their hair color. Brunettes might add red highlights to their hair, or dark blonde shades to add interest and depth. A good colorist knows where to place the highlights and how to place them so that hair looks natural and not painted.
